Probate Images - A
Cautionary Note
The images of Plymouth
County probate records
at FamilySearch.org are
an
invaluable resource for
genealogical
researchers, but I have
a cautionary
note for researchers.
The "old series" probate
records (1686-1881)
exist in
two image collections of
case files on the site.
Those images were
apparently filmed at
different times, and
some images of some
documents are
found only in one
collection.
The reason why the
beginning date of this
collection is 1633 is
that it
includes the New
Plymouth Colony probate
records. The 1686-1881
case files
are in image sets with
titles of the form
"Probate case files
1686-1881 no
10073-10149."
and its images sets have
titles of the form "Case
no 10057-10122 Hickey,
John-Hiller, Moses."
As an example of items
missing from one set, in
the second collection in
image set "Case no
3217-3294, Buck, Eunice
P.-Bumpus, Nathan" case
file
#3273 is represented
only by an image which
says "Missing Document"
at image
789. However, in the
first collection in
image set "Probate case
files
1686-1881 no 3215-3286"
case file #3273 is found
complete at images
721-728.
Researchers who are
looking for images of
1686-1881 case files
need to check
both collections to
insure that they have
seen all available
images.
